Exercise Physiology for the Olympic Disciplines

What is it?

Exercise physiology aims to describe and explain the body's responses to exercise so that an individual’s athletic potential can be maximized. Findings from exercise physiology research have been critical for developing training programs that enhance athletic potential across a variety of human sports, and this knowledge is increasingly utilized by top athletes in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines.

Join our experts to learn how exercise impacts the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems in human and equine athletes, cutting-edge tactics to counteract fatigue, and how an athlete’s management can be optimized to increase competition performance.

Each of these evening seminars offers a unique opportunity for food, fun, prizes, and lively presentations and panels by distinguished experts!

Recordings are available on our IGNITE members platform.

Thank you speakers for a wonderful experience in Florida

Expert Speakers

Dr. Tim Worden completed his MSc (Biomechanics and Neuroscience) and PhD (Biomechanics) at the University of Guelph. In addition to his work in the equestrian community, Dr. Worden is Director of Communications at Inteligex Inc. and Research Communications Specialist & Editorial Coordinator at the Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Research Unit at Toronto Western Hospital. He is a Member of the Equine High Performance Sports Group, a sport performance consultant, Researcher at Equine Analytics LLC, and Member of the Sport Horse Research Foundation. He specializes in the translation of human high-performance training concepts to equestrian athletes, with a special interest in the jumping discipline.

Dr Emmanuelle Van Erck - Westergren graduated from the Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Maison Alfort (France) in 1996. She did a PhD on respiratory functional tests in horses at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Liege (Belgium). Her work led her to participate to research projects in Equine Sports Medicine at Cornell University (USA) and at Uppsala University (Sweden). Emmanuelle is the author of more than 40 scientific articles and regularly lectures at international scientific meetings. She continues to collaborate to applied research projects in Equine Sports Medicine, to teach clinical training for the veterinary students and practitioners and to contribute regularly writing in both scientific and lay reviews.

Lance Brauman is an Adidas Professional Athletics Coach and Consultant based in Clermont, Florida. He is the Founder and CEO of Pure Athletics, which has produced 89 Major Championship Medals and 43 Olympians in the sport of Track and Field. His athletes hold American records in the 100m - 9.69s (Tyson Gay), 200m – 19.31s (Noah Lyles) and 200m indoors – 20.10s (Wallace Spearmon). These three results are #2, #3 and #3 on the all-time world record list. He has coached three Olympic gold medalists and seven world champions during his career. Lance completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology followed by a Master’s degree in Exercise Science at Auburn University.

Dr. Kirk Peck holds a BS degree in Exercise Science, a Master’s degree in Physical therapy, and a PhD in Higher Education, Administration, and Leadership. He is current Associate Professor in the Department of Physical therapy at Creighton University NE where he teaches topics in political advocacy, and clinical exercise physiology. Dr. Peck is a co-instructor in the University of Tennessee Certification Program in Equine Rehabilitation, Knoxville, TN and a past President of the Animal Physical Therapy Special Interest Group of the Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy, American Physical Therapy Association. In addition to providing orthopedic physical therapy services for the Ponca Native American Indian Tribe of Nebraska, Dr. Peck is also dual certified in both equine and canine rehabilitation. Dr. Peck’s equine interest is focused on performance enhancement in equine and equestrian athletes, and treating horses employed in therapeutic riding and Hippotherapy for children with disabilities.

Dr. Christopher Perry is an Associate Professor in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science and the Director of the Muscle Health Research Centre at York University in Toronto, Canada. The aim of Dr. Perry’s research program is to discover how muscle metabolism determines muscle health and fitness. A special emphasis is placed on understanding how physiological stress can either improve muscle fitness, as occurs during exercise, or worsen muscle health in diseases that cause weakness. By partnering with clinicians, applied health professionals, and industries in the nutrition, pharmacology and technology sectors, Dr. Perry’s lab seeks to translate their discoveries into innovative solutions that maintain or improve muscle health for broad populations.

Romane (Romy) Borrione, was raised in Paris and started riding horses with her older sister when she was young. Horses remained an important part of her life, and she competed in show jumping and eventing with an off-the-track thoroughbred while pursuing a master's degree in public affairs. She later obtained an additional master's degree in Equine Science and Business. During this time, Romy became fascinated with the thoroughbred racing industry, specifically the training of the horse athlete. She relocated to Australia in October 2019, and since then has been working in Melbourne for different racehorse trainers in sport science as a performance analyst and as a track rider. She created her own company, Race Day Ready, in January 2023, which is a consulting firm that helps trainers with horse performance and data analysis.
